Cardi B works with young Chinese designer Chen Peng to create a show-stopping look for the Met Gala in 2023. The Met Gala is the most significant yearly event on the fashion calendar. Cardi has already appeared on the Met Gala red carpet three times, but this year, in honor of the occasion that honors the entire body of work and life of great designer and artist, Karl Lagerfeld, Cardi has chosen to seek out the emerging forces in fashion.
Cardi quickly voiced her preference for a traditional, sophisticated look with the help of stylist Kollin Carter, paying homage to Monsieur Lagerfeld's timeless designs. Peng then produces a stunning black ballgown with dramatic camellia and matelassé elements, however blended with his own trademark quilted puffer style. He takes inspiration from Monsieur Lagerfeld's interpretation of the classic codes from the House of Chanel. Over 600 camellia petals were used in the design, which took more than 300 atelier hours to construct. In addition to being a testament to the quality of the design, it is also a tribute to Monsieur Lagerfeld's enduring legacy.
Designer Chen Peng is based in Shanghai, China, and started his own brand in 2016. He is renowned for designing avant-garde puffer jackets and has worked with brands like MM6 and Moncler all around the world. He also presents his first official scheduled runway show during Paris Fashion Week this year. Prior to that, he won the first Yu Prize established by Wendy Yu, a benefactor who endows the job of chief curator at the Costume Institute.
